2 MnO + 5 PbO2 + 10 HNO3 → 5 Pb(NO3)2 + 2 HMnO4 + 4 H2O
This is an oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction:
2 MnII - 10 e- → 2 MnVII (oxidation)
5 PbIV + 10 e- → 5 PbII (reduction)
MnO is a reducing agent, PbO2 is an oxidizing agent.
Reactants:
- MnO – Manganese(II) oxide
- PbO2 – Lead(IV) oxide
- HNO3 – Nitric acid
- Other names: Aqua fortis , Spirit of niter , Eau forte
- Appearance: Colorless, yellow or red fuming liquid ; Colourless-to-yellow liquid with pungent odour ; Colorless, yellow, or red, fuming liquid with an acrid, suffocating odor. [Note: Often used in an aqueous solution. Fuming nitric acid is concentrated nitric acid that contains dissolved nitrogen dioxide.]
