8 KMnO4 (aq) + 3 NH3 (aq) → 3 KNO3 (aq) + 8 MnO2 (s) + 5 KOH (aq) + 2 H2O (l)
This is an oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction:
8 MnVII + 24 e- → 8 MnIV (reduction)
3 N-III - 24 e- → 3 NV (oxidation)
KMnO4 is an oxidizing agent, NH3 is a reducing agent.
This is a precipitation reaction: MnO2 is the formed precipitate.
Reactants:
- KMnO4 – Potassium manganate(VII)
- NH3
